Common Virus Infections
When someone brings a computer into our PCQuikFix shop for our virus removal service, we give them a detailed list of how many infections were found along with the infection types. Some of the terms floating around today can be quite confusing as to how it relates to your infected PC.
Per Wikipedia, here are some of the most common virus infection definitions:
Adware
Adware or advertising-supported software is any software package which automatically plays, displays, or downloads advertisements to a computer.
Maleware
Short for malicious software, is software designed to infiltrate a computer system without the owner’s informed consent. The expression is a general term used by computer professionals to mean a variety of forms of hostile, intrusive, or annoying software or program code.
Rogue
Rogue security software is a form of computer malware that deceives or misleads users into paying for the fake or simulated removal of malware.
Root Kit
A set of software tools used by a third party after gaining access to a computer system in order to conceal the altering of files, or processes being executed by the third party without the user’s knowledge.
Spyware
Spyware is a type of malware that is installed on computers and collects information about users without their knowledge.
Trojan
A Trojan, sometimes referred to as a Trojan horse, is non-self-replicating malware that appears to perform a desirable function for the user but instead facilitates unauthorized access to the user’s computer system. The term is derived from the Trojan Horse story in Greek mythology.
Worm
A computer worm is a self-replicating Malware computer program. It uses a computer network to send copies of itself to other nodes (computers on the network) and it may do so without any user intervention.
