McAfee Shutting Down Windows XP PC’s

Today is a bad day if you are a McAfee subscriber and run Windows XP.  Reports are flooding in that the newest update is crashing Windows computers.

Specficially, it is triggering a false positive detection of w32/wecorl.a in 5958 DAT.  From Engadget:

“DAT update 5958 deletes the svchost.exe file, which then triggers a false-positive in McAfee itself and sets off a chain of uncontrolled restarts and loss of networking functionality.”

If you haven’t download this update yet, do not!  However, if you have already been burned, McAfee has posted a work around here.  It’s a little intimidating, so if you do not feel comfortable tackling the fix, let PCQuikFix help you out!
